The total number of robotics-related grants dropped by 29% in Q1 2023, according to GlobalData’s Patent Analytics. Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 331 in Q1 2023, versus 279 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 38% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that LG filed the most robotics patents within the consumer industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 66 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 42 in the previous quarter. It was followed by iRobot with 20 robotics patent filings, Intel (14 filings), and Gree Electric Appliances Inc of Zhuhai (13 filings) in Q1 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 19% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 19%, followed by South Korea (11%) and Japan (10%). The share represented by China was 6% lower than the 25% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
