Notably, the number of ecommerce-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 131 in Q1 2023, versus 204 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 57% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Rakuten Group filed the most ecommerce patents within the consumer industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 28 ecommerce-related patents in the quarter, compared with 22 in the previous quarter. It was followed by L'Oreal with 16 ecommerce patent filings, NIKE (12 filings), and LG (10 filings) in Q1 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by Japan with a 24% share of total patent filings

The largest share of ecommerce related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q1 2023 was in Japan with 24%, followed by South Korea (18%) and China (17%). The share represented by Japan was 2% higher than the 22% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
