The top five companies accounted for 15% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Nestle filed the most plant-based diets patents within the consumer industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 13 plant-based diets-related patents in the quarter, compared with 17 in the previous quarter. It was followed by CJ with 7 plant-based diets patent filings, Royal DSM (5 filings), and Technical University of Munich (4 filings) in Q1 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 43% share of total patent filings
The largest share of plant-based diets related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 43%, followed by South Korea (21%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by China was 10% lower than the 52% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
